June is here and I don't know about you but I'm ready for Summer! On Saturday our family had soccer games all day and I got a little sunburn...even that makes me happy. This week we will be focusing on the theme of "Summer". Summer for us always seems to begin with Father's Day. The kids around here seem to go to school a little longer than other states. Typically we get out and Father's Day is the first event we celebrate. This year we have two more weeks officially before summer can begin but around here we still kick it off with a Father's Day Celebration. My hubby is one of the best dads I know. He is a fan of games so I thought it would be fun to make a framed chess set. I have seen a few online and knew it would be perfect for a Father's Day summer surprise :)
This project was easy and the kids want to start playing it before we give it as a gift. I bought this frame from Ikea a while ago for a different project but never got to it. It was just waiting for me! I cut a piece of 1/4 inch mdf to fit the frame and then divided it into sections.
Next I added some color by painting some of the rectangles. It worked out nicely to leave some the natural color of the wood. Finally I hot glued some plastic strips I had for the game chess pieces to sit on.
Such a fun, easy project that the whole family can enjoy and the Father in this house will be happy!
Stay tuned for a week of Summer inspired projects. It's always fun to see what everyone is crafting!

What a cute idea! I've never seen anything like this! It would be so fun to have hanging in the hall or somewhere and have a continuous game going. Every time you walk past you could make a move!
