Recipe & Tablet Stands from Craft Goodies!

Hello to you all!

It's Wendy from Craft Goodies here to wrap up this week of kitchen inspiration. So, I have a confession. I love posting last. It gives me more time to really check out the other projects and as always, add a few things to my "need to make" list. While that list keeps growing, I did manage to get one thing off of it with this month's theme...

{The tablet went missing right at picture time so you get my phone! Too many little helpers in this kitchen...}

 I love to cook. And more and more I find myself pulling recipes from online sources, there are so many good ones out there! It's so easy to pull something up on my tablet and not have to dig through my cookbooks. The problem is that my tablet is then very much in danger of becoming part of the recipe! I needed somewhere to put it where it would be safe from flying flour but I could still read the directions, a tablet stand was definitely needed!

 

I had every intention of cutting a base board out but happened to be in Hobby Lobby a few weeks back and found this little cutie. Perfect size, already painted to match my kitchen, and it was half off!

 (It's cut from 1/4 inch MDF if you wanted to cut your own)

 

To make the shelf, I cut a piece from a square dowel--just wider than my tablet, and then a thin strip of MDF just taller than the dowel to make a little "lip" to hold the tablet in place...

 

...glued them together (use wood glue!), gave it a few coats of gray paint...

 

 

...and then glued it into place.

 

The stand on back is made from 2 pieces of 1x2 hinged together and then glued to the back of the base board. And done! So cute, and just what I needed!

 

The bonus was while I was in Hobby Lobby I found the cute clip board stand too! Perfect for the paper recipes that I still use, granted it was HOT PINK {and oh so cute, could I get away with a hot pink kitchen?} but that was easily fixed with a screwdriver and a can of spray paint.

 

So, thank you Krystal for a fun and needed theme, this little corner of my kitchen is  now so much cuter and user friendly. My tablet will live a much happier and cleaner life!

Kitchen Cord Organizer by Under My Umbrella

Wow!  It's been one of those days.  It's Melinda from over at Under My Umbrella.  I'm excited to be up and posting again on WYLTC but I should have been posting about 9 hours ago.  I guess that's when you just say "Better late than never!".  I had a few ideas for projects for this month's kitchen theme.  None of them went as planned.  Boo!  The positive side of failed projects is I finally finished one that has been on my "to do" list for a while.   Our kitchen counter area seems to be charger station central.  We have cords for iPhones, iPads, iPods and DS games systems everywhere. I've seen lots of those cool cord charger organizers on pinterest and decided to make one up so I could hide the big mess of cords.

Goodness!  I love organization.  It just makes you feel good.  This project may look familiar... or not.  I made this for a project way back when for WYLTC.

A few months ago I took the box out of my kitchen and was trying to figure out what to do with it.  This project is perfect for it my cord organizer.  Basically I took some old molding, nailed it together to form a box and spray painted it.  For it to become my organizer I had to make a minor change.  I needed some place for the cords to come up to the top.  I used my saw to make 5 slits in the box. 

Turn it over on it's side and BAM!  Cord organizer :)  It needed a little more pizazz.  I grabbed some paper cut it in strips and used some mod podge to apply it to the wood.

It was really easy and changed the look of the project.  So there we have it.  My counter went from something like this...

It's called happiness!  I feel so grateful to be crafting with the wonderful ladies of WYLTC.  They really are a great bunch of people.  Thanks for putting up with my tardiness.  Craft up something wonderful and share it with us.  I love seeing what everyone is up to :)

Kitchen EAT Letters-Crafty Sisters

Hello from Crafty Sisters!
We loved Krystal's Kitchen theme this month and we have a fun set of
EAT letters that are perfect for decorating in your kitchens.

We thought it would be fun to show 3 separate sets that we've put together from the
same set of letters that we cut from 3/4" MDF.
You can also find unfinished letters to use in your local hobby store but if you are adventurous enough to try cutting out your own check out www.dafont.com for a huge selection of fun fonts you can use.

All you will need are wood letters, paint, Mod Podge, scrap booking paper and your embellishments.

With these sets we used a fork we got at the thrift store and flattened it with a rubber mallet to create a sign holder that says Bon Appetit!  We glued it on with some E6000 which works great gluing metal.

 There are so many cute little embellishments you can use~by the way Hobby Lobby has a great sale this week on all sorts of little embellishments 50% off!

Here is another set we did with neutral black and white papers.

It's always amazing to me how you can personalize a set of letters to make them your own!

This watermelon inspired set were some I put together for a client and I cut out a separate little watermelon to go with them.  They turned out so fun!

Menu Planning- Sassy Sanctuary

Hello!  Its so good to be back with another round of WYLTC!  Its Krystal of Sassy Sanctuary here to kick off this months projects. And since I got to choose our theme, we are doing "kitchen" crafts this month.  Yay!!

So... one of my big goals (and has been for a long time) is to cook more at home.  I'm ashamed to admit how much we eat out as a family.  I know that cooking at home is so much better for everyone, because I can control what goes into our food!  Also, its sure to save a ton of money.  The main problem is planning.  Usually I have no plan, so by the time dinner rolls around we have nothing to eat, so we go out.  So I knew I needed to put together a meal planning system.

Now there are a ton of different and adorable ideas of menu boards all around blog land and pinterest.  But I wanted to take it a step farther and have pre-planned weeks.  Let me show you what I came up with and I can further explain.

 

So here is my menu board.  Most of the menu's I've found have a place to hold meal ideas and a place to plan out your week.   But that's not what I wanted.  I wanted to have pre-planned weekly packets.  So I have 6 little boxes.  Each box is going to hold 5 recipes for dinner that week, and a shopping list.  And I'm going to try to organize each week to use similar ingredients to help reduce waste.  So if I use a half an onion one day, the other half will get used later that week.  

Then all I'll have to do is at the beginning of each week, select a packet, shop my pantry to determine what I still need from the store.  Shop once for the whole week. (What a concept!  I'm the queen of going to the store everyday to get only what I need for that day, its awful.) Make 5 dinners throughout the week.  We will have leftovers one day and still go out once a week.  I love that I'll have everything I need for the whole week, but I can still decide that day what sounds good from the weekly packet.

I'm still working on the gathering and organizing of all our favorite family recipes, but I think once I get it all in place its going to be a brillant system!

The actual board was pretty dang simple to make too.

I just got the board from lowes.  I found these "purse" boxes at micheals...

 

It was the perfect size to hold a 4x6 recipe card.  So I took the extra help from the store and got those and just cut the handles off with a jig saw.

Then I glued the boxes to the board using gorilla glue.  Spray painted, and then added the cute scrapbook paper to each box front.

I also found the little labels in the scrapbook section of micheals and thought they added a nice touch.

The title "Dinner" at the top is also just scrapbook stickers.  Easy!

And thats about it!  Hang and start planning!

I'm super excited about it and can't wait to get everything organized so I never have to plan dinner again!  haha!!

4th Of July Banner Crafty Sisters

Happy 4th of July!
Candace and I hope you are having a wonderful holiday
and we're excited to share our cute little wood Patriotic banner with you!

It's pretty simple~we just made elongated pennants approximately 4 x 10 inches.
We cut them from 1/8" MDF, it's perfect for banners, not too heavy, not too thick, and makes them
a whole lot sturdier to store and hang.

What made these pennants fun was that we cut out a separate piece to layer on the top.
Scallop, round and triangle edges add a bit of pop and depth to each pennant.

I find that my banners all end up looking very similar though, I can resist to bejewel them
for a little pop!  I guess it's okay to go along with today's "sparklers" right?!

{One Board} Flag from Craft Goodies

Hey there everyone! 

Happy Birthday to America wishes coming at you from Wendy at Craft Goodies.

I have a little confession to make. I didn't make a project this month...

 

Here's the deal. I was a bit stumped by the theme for this month. I already have a flag piece that I love. I tossed around a few more ideas but kept coming back to my original flag. So why try and re-do something that I already smile at every time I see it hanging on my front door?

I couldn't.

Instead I decided to share the original tutorial for my Easy {One Board} Flag.

I hope you enjoy it--

 

You need a 1x4x6 and some scrap cardboard.

A little bit of craft wire and some paint. That's it.

Cut the 1x4 into 4 pieces.

1 Header @ 12 inches long

2 small stripes @ 15 inches long each

1 long stripe @ 16.5 inches long

 

Paint the boards, header = blue,

small stripes = red,

long stripe = white

 

Drill holes into the stripes so they can be wired together.

 4 in the white stripe, one in each corner about half an inch in. 

2 in each of the red stripes, in the corners that match up with the holes drilled into the white stripe.

 

 

Thread a piece of wire through the holes, twist together, and then give a little curl to the ends.

 

 

Line up the header across the top of the stripe pieces.

Drill 3 holes along the bottom of the header and coordinating holes into the top center of each stripe.

Wire the header to the stripes.

Add two more holes across the top of the header to create a wire hanger. Wire pieces together.

 

Make your stars next.

Draw them out onto the cardboard then cut them out.

 

Separate the cardboard layers to create some texture.

Paint the stars, distress the edges if you'd like.

Glue the stars onto your flag.

 

 

Almost done!

 Add a few embellishments like ribbon, buttons, berries, or glitter.

 

(You could add some lettering like "Stars & Stripes", "Old Glory", "Bless the "USA" etc.)

Find a spot to display your work, and enjoy!

Flag inspired USA- Sassy Sanctuary

Hello everyone!  Krystal from Sassy Sanctuary here.  I'm so excited to be here for another round of Wood You Like to Craft!  Its seems like life this year has been so crazy busy that I just don't find the time to craft like I use to.  (I'm sure it has nothing to do with the baby and now having 3 kids) So I just love having the WYLTC gals give me that push to create something.  Because each time I do I remember why I love crafting!!

4th of July is my very favorite holiday.  So I love all things red, white, and blue!  And my project this month was SO super simple.  All I did was get some U-S-A letters from the craft store and add scrapbook paper to them and a star.  Simple.

But they are SO cute!  Sometimes the simplest projects are the most rewarding.

Keeping with the "flag" theme I did the U in a blue, and the S and A in a red and white stripe.  (OK... its a chevron.  But if you think about a waving flag the stripes would kinda look like a chevron pattern.... right?  right?)

And I decided not to add 50 stars.  One was going to have to do. (But its a sparkly one so that makes up for it!)

But I still think that anyone looking at it would get the idea that its supposed to be a USA flag.  ;)

But the BEST part about my USA is that it made me finally put my mantle display together!

I have been a total slacker at changing out my mantle display and it was definitely time to take the Easter bunnies down!  I am loving this vignette!  Its my favorite one I've done for awhile.

Of course the star of the show is the U-S-A...

 but I also make a pinwheel banner out of scrapbook paper...

And added my fire crackers from a few years back with some mason jars and greenery.

I'm just loving the whole thing.
